Leathercraft Techniques

Hi all, I have a question on the aesthetic of the stitching. I like the clean angled look. However I struggle a little with consistency. What tools will give me this look. Is the stitching awl necessary? How can I achieve consistency on either side of the leather (often one side looks flawless but the other shoes the stretched leather etc...)
