Hello Leathercraft Masterclass Experts!
I am in the process of making a tote, it consists of Chrome tan with a bit of Veg Tan Accents and handles. I have Uniters Edge Paint arriving on Tuesday, however they were out of the primer at the time I placed the order. I have used Tokonole as a base coat, sanded, and then painted the edges with EdgeFlex and this has held up well. I have not used Uniters before and am wondering if Tokonole would serve well enough as a base coat? It would be great if I could get right to painting on Wednesday after the United Paint gets here. I did see where Phillip recommended French Saregum Water-Based Glue diluted as a base coat. Should I wait for that (it is also in my Tuesday order) or go ahead with Tokonole?
Thank you!
Cindy
I just had a thought. .... a twist on a quote taken from an Equine Philosopher .....
"The more I sand my edges, the better my edge cutting gets"
Hi Cindy,
Primer isn't always necessary unless the leather you are using is very high in oils or waxes. Most leathers won't really need this and regular edge paint will adhere well by itself.
I would use caution with Tokonole as it contains wax and silicon listed in the ingredients, both will retard edge paint from penetrating the leather fibres. If you are also burnishing your edges with Tokonole and then applying edge paint, I am impressed with the performance of EdgeFlex! This will close off the fibers totally and eventually peel.
Edge paint needs a raw edge that is clean cut in order to penetrate and hold. Primers are for difficult leathers.
I hope this makes sense.
