Try covering the entire piece of leather on the flesh side with contact adhesive and wrap the lighter with it.
When you've pulled everything in and crimped all the edges with edging pliers, trim leaving about 3mm excess for the stitching.
Rather than stitching it, carefully tease the glued seams apart making sure not to stretch the leather too much.
Place it down flat and trace onto card stock to create your pattern for that lighter shape.
