G'day, so I'm a fellow beginner. I have just started upgrading my tools. I have 2 awls. My favourite one is like this. Generally ya tools don't come sharp. It costs the manufacturer allot of time to get that razor edge we need. I reckon if you sharpen the blade it will turn into a 'new tool'. (Mine did). The difference between a cheep tool and an expensive one, the materials, how long they hold n edge for(amongst others). It has taken me 12 months to learn how to keep my various tools sharp. It was time worth spent.

Ahhh... of course, this explains why my trials all pealed! And it makes total sense, the edge paint will be kinda floating on top of the wax. Nice, thanks bunches for the feedback!

G'day, I get it... but don't get rid of ya old tools. I've found ya learn bucketloads if you try and modify them to make them 'better'. AND you can. but if space is an issue, most of the metals will recycle ok.

Yep, my first set of deicent irons was a 3mm. Then (by recommendation of this training local) I got a 3.85. It's a great combo. I'm finding the 3.85 the ones I tend to reach for more often... try doing a set of belts with a 3mm set. phew... I guess you learn how to stitch by the end. 3 and a 3.85 <- great combo.

I see what you did there... a turned edge with a nice lined backing. Your stitches are really nice. I'm also a beginner, so I dont know what to say... good work?! 😀

G'day peeps, So, I've shelled out some $$$ and have received my roller edge paint thingie... simply put its the 'ducks n^_s' it's got race bearings to pivot on, the nearing on the end to pick up the dye is sharp and well defined. And the finish is fantastic, my edge painting has never looked so good. Below is a picky of my 'quick letsgiveitago'.

I find im always reaching for my smaller mallet. I have the Barry King tiny one. It's got these little ridges on it to stop the tool slipping off when you strike it. This was my first 'upgrade'.

What stitch marks are you trying to hide? Do you mean the stitch guide line you made before pricking the leather? Yes, exactly. I was thinking of wetting the leather before making my 'stitch line'... not sure. And why are you saying that you should never start a stitch run in the corner? what trouble or issue did it create for you? It didnt create trouble... I think it just looks stupid. I think it looks better if the 'end of stitch' is done on a edge side, I feel it's less noticable. 😀

So this is chrome taned leather... which is why the wax is not turning that pretty colour - cool. What I hear you telling me is "go on, practice those turned edges. and seam bindings" 😀 - ok I will!

G'day, It's .5mm, there are 2 layers, cause it's a bit... floppelie. It's kangaroo. So about 1mm thick in total. I bought these hides because they were cheeper than cardboard. My thinking is, give it ago a few times for practice, then do a 'real' one on better leather. I have some 1.5mm bovine vegtan (natural).
