I decided to pull apart an old wallet of mine to see how it was constructed. A full wallet seemed a little daunting so I decided to turn the card holder part into just a card holder as a bit of a pre run to the wallet. I have used goat skin from AAcrack and 0.45 thread from Wuta. A little more skiving required for a more slender edge.

So, I have been trying to make the passport holder for a week now. I just don't have the ability yet to hand skive this project and end up with a piece of leather that is the same size as the pattern. I will save it for another time. My skiving has improved though. So here is another watch strap. The keep is a little heavy and I should have used my new found skiving skills to thin it down!

So, I wanted to post much sooner than this but it has taken a while to get to an acceptable level to be able to post something. I still have a way to go but I do see big leaps in progress from my earlier attempts. I have to confess that I have tried this watch strap project about a dozen times to get to where I am now. I haven't ventured off to other project much at all. I have found that the watch strap requires many different skills to complete well, so I am just looking to perfect my skills with more of this project. I also would add that a lot issues for me have come from using cheaper materials to practice on. I do believe that spending more on better quality leather is probably the better option when learning. I used: 1.6mm veg tan leather and 0.8mm black goat skin for the lining. 3mm Crimson Hides stitching irons. Giardini basic edge paint 0.6mm tiger thread.

My name is Neale, I am a Brit living in Vienna Austria. I started to dabble in leatherwork about a year ago out of interest for something new to learn with my hands. I bought a few chinese patterns and watched a few tutorials on the internet. I haven't come very far of course. Absolutely delighted to have found this site a few weeks ago. Steep learning curve but great lessons. I have started with the watch strap pattern but needed to scrap the first attempt as I just wasn't accurate enough in my pattern cutting. Second time around and looking better. Will post my final result.
