@Leathercraft Masterclass still getting used to the clipped tip. I think the knives are Japanese or Korean. Super sharp with a polished edge and nicely flatted back which makes keeping them sharp a doddle. I think at £25 ish each, they’re a bargain. Highly recommended

An update on this knife. It was my go-to knife until recently. I’m now using knives from Crimson Hides in Singapore. They do two which are sharpened and tuned straight out of the box which is a bit of a bonus. They’re a little more expensive but the thing I like is that they are relatively small and more comfortable to use and keep their edge with the help of Phil’s stropping system!

@Leathercraft Masterclass cheers Phil. I was hoping someone would have solved it! The “resin” impregnation is like Teflon lol. Lovely leather but not clever if you can’t stick anything to the back of it that needs to be flexed.

Ecostick 9004 which is my usual contact adhesive. Evo-stik solvent impact. PVA

@Philip the shape of the knife body isn’t comfortable for me to use. It’s just a piece of brass bar with a slot, chamfer and the corners knocked off! Better off trying to find a snap-off with a more robust locking mech IMO. There must be one out there.

Interesting thread. I’ve got a L'indispensable but don’t know what all the hype is about with them. Standard blade dulls really quickly. I prefer my Stanley snap-off but get the same issues as Phil in that the screw lock isn’t very secure and allows the blades to slip (The thread pitch allows it to back-run). I’ll try some snap-off blades in the brass handle but worry about them slipping down through the slot and taking my fingers off! TBH the brass handle shape isn’t that comfortable for my grip. I much prefer the Stanley. Is there a snap-off kinife out there with a better clamp screw system than Stanley?

@Fadi let me know how you get on with it and as you say, by far the cheapest leatherworking tool you will buy 😂 I also have a smaller Japanese skiving knife and a Blanchard but I prefer the cheap one because it doesn’t have a bulky handle. I’m sure Phil knows why most knives have handles that get in the way 🤓

Don’t forget for that money you have to tune the blade 😬

I had to regrind and polish the blade which only took half an hour or so. I’ve had to do that on much more expensive knives though to get them right. I think it was great value and works very well now it’s been tuned. I like it because it doesn’t have a handle which makes it very versatile.

Thanks guys for your input. Head torch is genius! I’ll put it on the list 👍 I’ve got a bench light/magnifier but it gets in the way whilst using a mallet!! Forever moving it out of the way, but having a light attached to my head is the way ahead. That’s usually out of the way of my mallet 🤓
