One Weird Trick Made me LOVE MY WORK!

Figured I'd try the clickbait-y title hahahaha.

In all seriousness, not a weird trick at all. I've begun taking better photos of my work and I do find myself loving what I've produced quite a bit more. So much so that I am now even MORE attached to the stuff I make. Makes it so hard to say goodbye to the pieces.

Some notes about these photos:

You don't need expensive camera gear. I use an old Canon T3i body, and some old film lenses I've adapted to use for the digital body.

I used prime/fixed focal length lenses for these shots.

No lightbox needed, I used natural light from a window.

No post production either, but maybe some Lightroom edit would be good to try someday.

Feel free to ask me anything about the pieces or photography process.

@smithdal Using window light? I'd set up lower, think floor, or have the item on a prop that is unobtrusive. I think the challenge is finding a spot that isn't full of distracting things that take away from the highlight. If you see my set up when I take shots, you'd probably laugh!

You can remedy the objects in the background problem by having a shallow enough depth of field, but for larger items, having a good location/set up would probably be what I would try to address. I've made one tote bag and it can stand on its own, and I took the photos outside because the indoor option wasn't going to look great. If I were to redo the shot (it didn't turn out great outside either!), I'd wait until it's the "golden hour" which is either sunrise or sunset.

Another option I think would be to do those "flat lay" style photos, I think that would still work indoors with window light.
