Project completion times

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this should be here, or in the Mastermind group, but I'm curious as to everyone's relative duration in completing the various projects. As I'm hoping to launch a small business producing leather goods next year, I'm hoping to gauge my times against the majority of more accomplished crafters here, so I can review my processes and bring my completion times down, as this impacts both my pricing and the number of projects that I can complete.

As an example, the simple card slot wallet, took me 2.5 hours to complete from start to finish, with half the time spent on hand sewing. I know this can go faster, and could likely get completion down to 2 hours, but I'm curious as to the amount of time that others would spend on a similar project.

Phil - would this be something that you could add…

Thanks for the quick reply and advice. Just for clarity, when I mention the 2.5 hrs above, that is independent of any drying time (I applied 3 layers of edge painting). As you mention one can easily move to another project while this one is drying, which I had done.

I also appreciate the difficulties of suggesting a duration within the courses as there are multiple variables that may create a range of times. If others on the forum would be interested in this information, I’m happy to continue posting the amount of time it is taking me to complete the various projects with times for the various steps. Just like the comment.

All the best, Rob

US Leather Crafters Needed

I represent a luxury handbag company with HQ in Ft Worth TX. We have a facility producing bags in Mexico with many very fine crafters. We make custom made-to-order bags. However, the permitting processes for exotic animals is causing us some extreme pains on our delivery times...which spin out into customer management issues. We are looking to outsource our exotic business to small businesses and crafters in the US. If you are interested in applying, send pictures of handbags that you have produced to Spence@drishtipoint.com Thank you PS - Phil, I realize this is your forum, hopefully it is ok that I post about my business here. Feel free to connect with me directly or delete if not in line with community rules. If you have a list of US crafters, I would also be open to discussing.

Hi Spence. If you're not sure about a post, just shoot me an email and we'll have a chat. In the meantime, the post is fine as long as all business is conducted off the forum. Best of luck!

Is there any chance you could make some of the tools yourself? If it's that hard to get tools in Egypt, you may have a business opportunity on your hands! If you can make a few items like a skiving knife or an awl, you could cover some of your bigger tool costs. Just an idea.

I have made a few of my own basic tools, and I can't say I'm particularly skilled at it, but I do get quite a few requests to buy them.

Logo or no logo

Recently I made a bag for a many times returning customer and as I had acquired an embossing machine in between her orders I blind embossed my logo on the leather which I had not done previously. She let me know that she loves the bag but doesn't like the logo on

it and suggested I ask customers if they want it or not. I would love to hear opinions on this issue as I have such conflicting emotions

about it.

I believe all artists should sign their work. In the beginning, I simply signed the interior of my handbags and journals (and still do), but now I also brand them in a subtle fashion, as to not distract from the simplicity of the design (often under a flap or on the interior). If you do not brand/sign your work, you leave yourself open to having it stolen and if so, then the only thing of which to prove authenticity, will be your signature/brand. I have actually had clients want me to add a larger brand to their pieces; it was quite an honor actually!

Sign your work with excellence!!!
