I am using a box cutter and the blade bends while I cut. The cut end up being angled or wavy during the length of the cut. I don’t know if this is a practice issue ( I am a beginner ). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like you are using a lot of pressure if the blade is bending. i would try using a lot less pressure. let the knife blade do the work, even if it takes 5 or 6 cuts, just very little pressure. see if that works better.
Another tip is to make sure that your blade is always very sharp. If you're using a boxcutter then you could change out the blade for a fresh one as soon as you notice the cutting getting more difficult or taking a pass more than it should.
That's ok, I used to try and cut everything in one pass, but found I was putting that much pressure onto the knife, my ruler would move as well, so I just use as many light strokes as needed. Especially if you are cutting shapes forehand, the lighter the better.
