Nothing like the NYC that might come to mind: I'm in rural, New York State, north of the Adirondack Mountains, 6 hours from NYC and less than an hour from Canada.
Ive been drawn to work with textiles my whole life, beginning with garment making as a child and freeform art quilts much later. Three years go I landed on bag making. At first waxed canvas was a new exciting textile for me, now I make my own from plain cotton canvas witch I die by hand then wax; It forms the base for most of my bags. I often use cork fabric for accents and other textiles for linings. Fibergardens is far more a hobby than a business, people come to my workshop with an idea for the type of bag they want, we hash out the details, select fabrics and hardware, then I'm off to work. So I have experience with bag construction, refurbishing and design. Ive used leather for straps since the beginning of bag making. More recently I’ve been paring leather with waxed canvas for accents and very recently have made all leather bags using my industrial sewing machine. The name Fibergardens comes from a long standing passion for landscape gardening and my love of textiles. Expanding into leather craft is a natural fit. I look forward to gaining a working knowledge of the wide variety of leathers, mastering hand stitching and other leather techniques. My goal is to make high quality leather bags and accessories.
