Hello Everybody! I stuggle, and I do mean struggle, with placing stitching holes when using patterns that don't have them. Don't even get me started when it comes to gussets! GEESH! I have ruined or abandoned more projects than I would care to admit. What techniques do you guys use to determine placement and spacing of stitching holes?

I would agree with others here in that this is a fairly complicated question with no one-size-fits-all answer. The "size" of the project needs to be taken into consideration as well as the "look" that you're going after. The larger the project, the wider the spacing you can have. For the distance away from the edge, my "general" rule of thumb is that it is about the same as the thickness of the leather.
Hello again,
Distance from the Edge depends on your stitch spacing. If I remember correctly, Phil advises to use the same distance from the edge as your stitch spacing (so 3mm from the edge for 3.0mm irons, 3.38mm from the edge for 3.38mm irons, etc...). I personally stitch around 2.7mm from the edge at all times, but again, this is a personal choice.
What you are facing is something common in my opinion: a perfectionist using a non-perfectionist's template. Basically, the template you are using was built without really thinking about stitch spacing and can be a real pain in the a** to build to "our" standards.
Regarding the ruler you got with the spacing on, there is an easier solution than using that. Glue a piece of paper on cardboard, cut a straight edge and prick it as if you mean to stitch it. This will be a perfect replica of the teeth of your irons, so you can now bring it onto your project to see where your stitches will go.
An alternative, and it is something I personally do when I am lazy and buy a template as opposed to designing on. I print it, build it in cardboard, and then modify it to fit my irons spacing. Maybe move a pocket a half mm up or down, or modify the width of the item, etc...
I again invite you to show us a template and we could all work on it together, this is, in my opinion, the best way to show you as we will be working on some concrete stuff, not just in general terms.
Hi J,
Could you tell us what outcome you are ideally looking for, what you're struggling to do (distance from the edge, where to start and stop etc) and what you've tried so far?
I just want to get a more detailed idea of the problem.
This is a very tricky question to answer you. you do not approach a gusset build like you a small card holder.
It would be very helpful if you could show us one pattern you struggle with (No need for the actual pdf, just pics) and we could all discuss it together.
I honestly cannot think of a single "good for every situtation" trick .
Also, what iron spacing are you using?
