Skiving machine - sharpening

Many times we think a two-minute touch-up grind is sharpening the edge when it is not. Periodically, we need to do a 10-minute grind to mate the stone properly with the knife edge.

I now periodically mark only the tip of the knife edge so I can see immediately if the stone is sharpening the edge. If I see no ink removal, I know to do a longer grind.
