Decided to give a card holder a try, since a) I’m stuck at home, b) @Leathercraft Masterclass has a great class on how to do one, and c) my store bought one fell apart. Oh, and to justify my recent spending spree on alligator and Croc from American tanning (damn their evil sales!!) by using at least one leg of one hide 😂🐊🐊🐊🐊.
Made from aforementioned American Tanning glazed mandarina alligator, cash pocket lined with black calf, and card slots lined with some beautiful teal silk twill left over from another make. Stitched in 532 Fil au Chinois using KL 3.00mm French style irons, with custom mixed edge paint (red + orange Uniters, from RM Leather Supply).
it always amazes me how many tools and steps it takes to make something so small and ’simple’. There’s nowhere to hide in simplicity. Other side note; I used the legs of the hide. I know some people consider them scrap and don’t use them, but I actually like the patterning on the legs and hate waste. To keep the alligator stable, I lined using a self-adhesive reinforcement fabric (also from RMLS). Won’t be doing that again - worked perfectly well as an interfacing, but was a *@%!& to stitch through, and gummed up my beautiful KL irons.
Last pic is my stitching moral support buddy.
Thank you so much! I was happy to be able to use the leftover silk (I made a whole jumpsuit for myself in the same fabric lol)
@bronte.esta Beautiful work! I really like the silk lining, really makes the product unique.
😂 Absolutely! I should not let my expectations of someone’s spendability be my constraint :)
Thank you so much! It’s nice to be able to spend more time than usual on leatherwork and crafting. Thanks for sharing the Tom Ford link, really interesting (now, if only I could command those prices! 😛). Really appreciate your thoughts and insights.
Huh, interesting. I double checked, and sure enough, they are no longer stocking the colors, only the gloss / primer / thickener products. Looks like they are carrying vernis now, in matte colors. I bought Uniters bottles of the three primary colors, plus black and white, so luckily will be good for a while, but will definitely keep an eye out for you. District Leather Supply also used to have it and no longer does.
thanks!!
That's pretty sweet work!! Great to see folk using the time indoors to do something superb! I shouldn't make excuses about using legs in the item - I've seen some very high end fashion houses do the same ( https://www.tomford.com/classic-alligator-bifold-wallet/Y0138C-A12.html ) It might not "always" be done but I think it adds something a little different, a little "pop" so credit where credit is due.
You might share more on your edge paint source. I'm in the market for some at the moment and it appears RM Leather does not make it available - unless I'm mistaken somewhere.
Again, nicely done!
