Hey everybody,
If you're willing to share, can you drop a note below on where you purchase leather from? I'm interested in high quality calfskin, bull calf, and goat. Prefer vegetable tanned but not opposed to chrome.
I like in the US and buy a decent amount of my supply from RM Leather. However, I find some of their prices to be too high and am looking for hides/skins that are a little more luxurious or different from what they sell to a lot of us in the US. I've also used a few hides from Wickett & Craig here in the US but I'm looking for more supple and pliable hides than what they provide.
I've purchased a few hides from BuyLeatherOnline.com and am curious if others have purchased from them, and what your thoughts are on their quality is. So far, I've purchased Saffiano, Epsom, and a couple of leathers @philipjury linked in course supplies. However, I'm not sure if their quality of leather across the board is good or not.
I have samples coming my way from Remy Carriat for bull calf. Haas refuses to work directly with me (they want me to go through RML).
For those of you in the US and Europe, where do you turn for quality hides? I'm willing to spend for more luxurious or high-end hides, but am just not quite sure where else to turn. Any help or insight you all have would be greatly appreciated.
District Leather Supply has some very nice Italian veg tan. https://districtleathersupply.com
Hi Alex,
Take a look at https://www.orioncalf.com. They are a US supplier for Tannerie D’Annonay and Tannerie DuPuy. The smallest they sell is 1/2 hides of french calf. They also have baby calf, shell and sell crust.
I've bought quite a bit from BuyLeatheronline and have never had something that isn't what they said it was.
I think that the look and feel of Russian Leather is very good. It does feature in a lot of the highest quality items from people such as Dunhill. As far as i know, there is only one tannery in the world who has cracked how to make this leather after the original methods were lost in the 1917 revolution. That tannery is also the last remaining bark tannery in the UK - J&FJ Baker in Devon. The hide I have had is just wonderful; I think its quite manly in character and smell - but there are a lot of feminine items being made out of it
I agree about Abbey England and AA Crack. I would also add Metropolitan Leather and Marcus Gear. Again, iI've always been happy with what i have received from them.
Hi there,
I am located in Europe myself and there are a lot of different sources for leather,, depending on what you're after.
For veg tan leather there are some really good options from Italy, which there are various websites for and can also be ordered through vendors on etsy like Bobrikov (who also sells Zermatt from Haas).
England has some amazing veg tan leather as well and a good place to look would be on Abbey England or A & A Crack & Sons. If you're after more specific ways of hunting down quality tanneries or hard to reach tanneries Philip has elaborated a bit on how he has sourced leather in the past in the podcast series (I forget which one).
Belgium also has some nice tanneries, one of the more easily accessible ones is Radermecker. You can contact them for a catalog of their leather to see more about pricing.
On the course supply lists there are some good links for suppliers of leather, both chrome and veg tan. In general I think sites like RML provide a pretty good place to source a variety of luxury leathers and I am not sure if ordering small quantities directly from tanneries would result in lower prices in the end but it definitely is worth a shot :)
