Ideally, I'm looking for uniform form or relatively uniform stitching. I sometimes struggle with how far from the edge my stitching line should be. 3mm? 4mm? I've pretty much settled on 4mm and have stuck with that. Where to stop and start is challenging. Should a stitch be in the cormer at a 90 degree turn or a curve? For wallets and card holders I struggle with stitch lengths so close to the top of the card slot that it splits it. (UGLY!!) The visible difference between 3.38mm stich and 4mm may be barely noticable. But if the stitch falls awkwardly and you end up with a 5mm stitch, it then looks ginormous!! I've tried using the stitching chisel to just mark the leather, but sometimes I end up making so many adjustments placing the chisel I lose track of which holes I should be using, or there are so many little pricks that the thread doesn't seem to cover them....LOLOLOL. Yeah I'm extra!! I bought a ruler/slotted type tool that's supposed to help with that but I'm not having any luck using it. One night I measured the distance from the start of a line to the end, and then divided by the different chisels I have. Of course, all chisels aren't created equal! So that 3.85mm 5 tooth chisel may not be consistent all the way across.
