I would like to know if there is a rule out there for sizing a leather drop-in lining. Do I use the same measurements as the outside leather (I think this might make it too big) or do I remove a number of millimeters all around? Measuring the bag when it is stitched up isn't really going to be easy as there isn't a single straight line in it and it would leave too much uncertainty. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to my dilemma anywhere!!

Finished the bag on Sunday, 2 days before Xmas!! Close-run thing. Mistakes were made, things weren't done as I wished (tools stuck in customs), but fairly happy with my first attempt at a bag. Fitting the lining was challenging and I am very much looking forward to your project that includes such a technique!!
Take a strip of lining leather longer than you think the internal diameter is. Attach some double sided tape to the back of it and stick it to the inside rim of the bag. Cut the ends where they meet after going all the way around. Remove the leather carefully making sure you don't stretch it (add non stretch tape on the outside if using a soft skin), lay flat and measure.
Don't forget to add extra length to accommodate the side seams of the lining (usually 4). This will certainly get you close to exact. However, making a thick fabric/cheap leather lining as a prototype will also be very helpful.
