Cleaning “stale” leather
Hey everyone...how goes?
I have an old bag that belonged to my friends dad who has now sadly passed away. I'm restoring the back but the leather is very stiff and stale (very musky smell) and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for deep cleaning products. It's got a heavy pigment so I was thinking of potentially cleaning the flesh side. It's not great leather tbh! But it means a lot to my friend.
Any recommendations please?
Thanks in advance, Nick

So after cleaning it with a damp cloth and mild soapy water (saddle soap if you have it). Let dry, and treat with a product like Saphir Renovateur.
It looks to be pigmented leather, so cremes will probably only penetrate areas of wear /scratches /cracks.
If you want to restore it further, angelus paints mixed to match the color of the bag can be used to cover worn areas and cracks.
I have a new blog post on mixing paints here: BLOG
