Hi from Anne in Brisbane Australia. I was planning to line a pockets of handbag on the outside of a handbag with some natural pigskin that I have put sealant on. I just read that if pigskin gets wet it can damage it and can even rot. Therefore with our heavy tropical rain that can happen at times is that going to be a bad idea? I have sealed it. I was thinking the plain is nice and gives me the option to mix with die to create different looks for different bags.
Any advice from others with experience would be highly appreciated. Thank you kindly and is much appreciated .Thank you Anne :)
Hello Anne,
I've never heard of pigskin rotting. The whole point of tanning is to prevent that from happening, unlike rawhide which will rot when wet for long enough.
I wouldn't say pigskin is damaged by water more than any other skin. If it's something that worries you, use chrome tanned pigskin which is more resistant to water than vegetable tanned pigskin.
Can I ask what you are using for sealing the skin? And can you link the info you found about rotting pigskin?
