Hi Everyone. Can anyone share their experience with sewing machines? Everything i've done so far has been had stitched with stitching holes punched with a stitching chisel and I like the look that it produces. Having said that Im also thinking about time spent on hand stitching. In looking at sewing machines it seems like they all use needles that are significantly bigger than what I use currently (size 18 - 24) which tend to punch large holes in the leather. Does anyone have any insight into any machines that produce a more refined look?
Thanks!
Hi I am just starting out but, due to my hands having some problems I use a Cobra 26 Sewing industrial cylinder arm, which that can add a optional flat table . I certainly admire the hand sewing and easier I think to get get more precise placement of stitches by looking at it. But the Cobra goes at a very slow speed 1 stitch at a time slow if needed, or fast up to 2000 stitches if your game ( But that is not really suitable for leather work). It can sew from fine lambskin leather to 13 mm . It can also sew upholstery fabric as well . This is the smallest of the Cobra as there is 2 larger ones for saddlery work or heavier products. But I have this due to hand sewing much leather may be problematic for me.
Oh no, not even close!! 🙂
But you answered my question. I’m really trying to understand if there is a more automated solution that offers the same refined look that hand stitching provides. At this point in time I’m not willing to compromise on design and aesthetics.
thanks for the reply!
@koorosh.sharghi Are you at the point in your business where you struggle to keep up with orders? When you switch to sewing with a machine, what you gain in speed you sacrifice with durability (design depending), the aesthetic appeal, and the craftsman's touch.
If you are getting too busy I would explore other options such as raising prices and creating more exclusive products for discerning clients.
If you think that hand stitching feels like a chore however, that may be a good reason to switch.
