Good day All,
I purchased some hide which I plan to use to practice on, however I did so before joining this group and truly having any clue on what to look out for.
The finished side looks and feels lush but I find the underside is quite rough and not as smooth as I would like. Main issue is after pricking it, the holes are not always visible due to it's texture. Skiving the edges is also a mess due to it's finish.
Any tips on what product I can use to give it a better finish, both for working with and for the final product.
The specific leather is HAIG 2.3mm Whisky Tan
Many thanks,
Perry
@Leathercraft Masterclass , yes, the whole thing! I've applied some Tokonole and it did help. Same the whole hide is like that but lesson learned.
I didn't realise that the glass slicker mentioned was a pain of glass as I took it initially as the 'normal' edge slicker. Another thing to order :)
@Perry P Yeah that is rough! Is the entire hide like that, or just sections?
Good advice from @ddunn68 regarding tokonole. If you can't find a glass slicker, a wooden one normally used on edges also works, or you can buy a 4x4'' glass tile from B&Q. Just make sure the edges are rounded.
Moving this to the "Help Section". The mastermind group is for questions pertaining specifically to the courses Phil offers and is limited to the members subscribed to the courses only.
The Help section is open to all members and you will get more people engaging with your posts there :)
Many thanks ddunn68. I have Tokonole on hand and will give it a try on a scrap piece. Thanks the tips!
^^^ That's the short answer
If you are looking for a smoother finish to the flesh side you can burnish it with Tokonole and a glass slicker or you can try applying Tan Kote from Tandy. Or if you want to go the most refined method, it would be to line the piece with another thin piece of leather, grain side up.
